A #BHeard Town Hall at BRIC This Thursday, June 22

At the next #BHeard Town Hall at BRIC this Thursday, June 22, a panel of activists will discuss how best to work together in solidarity to advance women’s rights.

Inspired by the massive march on Washington the first full day of President Trump’s tenure — putting the new administration on notice that any rollbacks on reproductive, civil, and human rights would be vigorously protested — “reSISTER: Race, Identity & the Women’s Movement” will be a multimedia, live-televised event.

________

Sponsored by Third Wave Fund and Sadie Nash Leadership Project, the Town Hall will focus on the following questions:

  • How does the women’s movement intersect with issues of race, sexuality, class and ability?
  • How do we respect the leadership of young people, while honoring the impact, legacy and continued work of past generations?
  • How do we all move forward in solidarity to advance women’s rights?

Moderated by BRIC TV senior correspondent Brian Vines, the panel includes: Safia Mahjebin, Ella Fellow – Sadie Nash Leadership Project; Tamika D Mallory, co-chair of the Women’s March on Washington and the youngest executive director of the National Action Network; New York City Council member Laurie Cumbo, Chair of Committee on Women’s Issues, who founded the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) in Fort Greene.

Also appearing will be Rye Young, executive director of Third Wave Fund who currently serves on the Board of Directors of Funders for LGBTQ Issues and the Groundswell Fund; and Mahogany L. Browne, poet-woman of The World Poetry Slam, and founder/publisher of Penmanship Books; and Natasha Lennard from Salon Media Group.

The main theme will be unity. Says Aber Kawas, lead advocacy organizer for the Arab American Association of NY: “If we’re not a team, and we’re fighting against each other, then of course we’re not going to be able to rise together to fight for our causes.”
