Atlético Madrid’s incredible new stadium set to be unveiled this weekend

Following extensive renovations that include a state-of-the-art new roof, the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano stadium in the stunning Spanish metropolis of Madrid will be officially opened on 16 September. The impressive stadium is the new home of football club Atlético Madrid, and that night they’ll unveil their new ground as they take on Málaga in La Liga. Atlético make the move from their previous Vicente Calderon ground to Wanda Metropolitano (formerly La Peineta), which now boasts an impressive 67,000 capacity. Even for non-football fans visiting Spain, this incredible stadium is a must-see.

“The extension of the current Madrid track and field stadium started by planning a football stadium with an approximate capacity of 70,000 spectators”, say the Seville-based architects, Cruz y Ortiz. “It can then be converted into an athletics stadium with a capacity of 60,000 spectators, should Madrid be chosen to host the Olympic Games.”

The innovative design solution will ensure fans to the stunning city of Madrid enjoy an optimal viewing experience during games. “The new football pitch will be built at a lower level than the current pitch in such a way that allows spectators to be closer to the playing field, without disrupting visibility.” The pièce de résistance however, is undoubtedly the stadium’s impressive cover. “A light roof covering spectators sits on the stands like a large cloak. It can adapt to different situations and unifies the existing stadium and extension.” The installation of the new roof was a massive job that took an incredible four months.  as you can see from this timelapse video captured by the architects.

Don’t worry if you haven’t nabbed tickets to the Atlético V Málaga game on 16 September though; if you’re in Madrid and fancy seeing Estadio Wanda Metropolitano for yourself, there’ll most definitely be guided tours available soon. Keep an eye on the team’s website for updates.
