Chinatown Ice Cream Factory Fights to Remain in Bayard Street Storefront

One of the neighborhood’s beloved longtime businesses is trying to keep from being evicted. According to the New York Post, the owners of Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory are tangling with their landlord over a water bill.

The shop, a Chinatown mainstay since 1978, has a water cooling tower at 65 Bayard St. A couple of months ago, the Department of Health issued a summons for failing to register the tower. That’s when the property owner, Nathan Cheng, threatened eviction.

Christina Seid, whose family owns Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, told the Post, “My landlord is just really unbearable… He is doing anything he can to get us out to get a higher rent.” The water issue has apparently been the subject of various legal activity since 2011.

That’s when Cheng purchased the building from the Seid family. The ice cream shop pays only $1,000 per month in rent.

As we reported this past December, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory will be opening a new location in the Essex Street Market, when it opens a new facility as part of the Essex Crossing project later this year.
