Revealed: world’s top beer destinations for 2018


Whether it’s travelling to the home of the black stuff in Ireland to drink a Guinness at the famous storehouse or raising a hefty stein at Oktoberfest in Munich, there’s certainly no shortage of options for incredible trips for travel-loving beer enthusiasts. But if that’s not enough to inspire thirsty travellers to start planning their next city break, the top ten best beer destinations for 2018 have been revealed.

Unveiled by VinePair, a website that specialises in linking people who are interested in drinking culture with interesting activities around the world, the list of top 10 destinations spans the world, from small brewing scenes in South America to underground beer culture in Asia. Topping the list at number one is Richmond Virginia, a city that has welcomed 21 new craft breweries in less than ten years. As well as that, the recently revamped Richmond Beer Trail earned the city serious brownie points, while favourite brewers The Veil, Ardent Craft Ales and Tripple Crossing all gained honourable mentions.

US cities dominated the list, taking seven of the top ten spots, with New York, Chicago, and Madison, Wisconsin coming in second, third and fourth places respectively. New York will soon welcome a new permanent brewery by Grimm Artisanal Ales in Brooklyn’s East Williamsburg neighbourhood, while Transmitter Brewing in Queens is due to move to a bigger space this year.

Other cities on the list include Beijing, praised for its emerging craft beer scene that sees breweries such as Peiping Machine, Arrow Factory Brewing and Great Leap Brewing offering up interesting new creations, as well as Rio de Janeiro, and Seoul, which scored big points for “craft beer alley” in Gyeongnidan. Completing the list is St. Louis, Missouri which recently welcomed Side Project Brewing, complete with a Belgian-inspired taproom, Louisville, Kentucky, a city which increased its craft beer production by 20% in 2017 and anticipates another 12 breweries to open by the end of the year, and Boise, Idaho, which will see a second Payette Brewing location opening with the capacity to produce 100,000 barrels.
