Electric Mopeds are North BK’s Newest Ride-Share

A company called Revel unveiled a new moped ride-share program in North Brooklyn yesterday. The app-based startup lets you cruise around Brooklyn and Queens. Though moped-shares exist in other cities, including Atlanta and Pittsburgh, Revel’s service is the first of its kind in New York City.

The company rolled-out 68 mopeds yesterday throughout Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Bushwick to kick off the service. If you sign up, you can pick up the nearest moped, ride anywhere within Brooklyn or Queens, then return the bike anywhere within the “home operating area” in North Brooklyn

But, if you’re hoping to get to distant isles, you’ll need another plan, because you’re not allowed to ride Revel mopeds across bridges into Manhattan, Staten Island or The Bronx. If you do, you’ll be subject to a fine.

The first 20 minutes on a Revel moped will run you $4. Each subsequent minute costs 25 cents while riding or in traffic, or five cents while parked.

To hop on, you’ll need a valid driver’s license (subject to a $25 license verification fee), a credit card, and a safe driving record. If you sign up, you’ll get two free 20-minute rides, and if you’re new to mopeds, you can schedule a free lesson after registering.
