The Excel community in New York hosted a “Back-to-School Bar Night” to toast to the new year and collect donations for UJA’s “Supplies for Success,” an initiative to provide brand new backpacks filled with school supplies for children in need. Over 30 Excelers with representation from nearly every year came together at a downtown bar to see old friends and welcome new ones to the city over happy hour. Beyond regaling each other with summer travel adventures and sharing career updates, our community raised over $175 for school supplies that will go to children at one of UJA’s partner organizations, a domestic violence shelter in Brooklyn.
As our Excel community grows, the board is focused on creating opportunities to forge and maintain meaningful connections, as well as instill a culture of philanthropy. We chose to partner with UJA on their “Supplies for Success” initiative for this event because Excelers have had the privilege to succeed at top educational institutions, largely because of the support and foundation we received in our early years in school. School supplies are a critical part of educational success, and a simple way for us to pay it forward to the next generation in the New York community. New York is home to the largest Excel Fellows community, and we are excited for many more social events together this year!
