A newly-engaged English couple are to be reunited with their engagement ring after the New York City police department managed to retrieve it from a grate it had fallen down in Times Square. John Drennan and Daniella Anthony from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, eventually gave up after spending two hours trying to recover the ring.

John had proposed to Daniella in Central Park earlier that day – the sixth most-popular place in the world to get engaged, – but the ring was too big for her finger. She told the BBC that John wanted her to wear it anyway because he was so happy they were engaged, and as they walked back to their hotel, it slipped off her finger, bounced twice and fell down the subway grate. A CCTV video captured the pair unsuccessfully trying to recover the ring with dozens of passersby trying to assist them.

The NYPD later managed to recover and clean the ring, but could not find the couple. They put out an appeal on Twitter, including a clip from the CCTV footage, and it went viral with thousands of retweets. A friend of John and Daniella saw the appeal and contacted them shortly after they landed in the UK. “The (now) happy couple is back in their home country, but thanks to your retweets they heard we were looking for them!” the NYPD tweeted. “We’re making arrangements to get them their ring back. Congratulations!”

“We are so happy, we can’t believe it,” they told the BBC. “We could not believe it, we really thought it was gone. We don’t use Twitter – we had absolutely no idea this was going on. We are so thankful to everyone – especially the New York Police Department and everyone who shared our story.”
