Parents share the simple thing that keeps kids amused on flights

Taking a trip with kids is a chance to include them in a new adventure and create plenty of family memories – but long-haul flights and lengthy journeys can mean bored and fussy children before you even get to your destination. Luckily, if you’re a parent looking to travel with kids in tow, there is an incredibly low-key and cheap way to keep your kids entertained on flights: a simple set of pencils and paper.

The UK travel site Tots to Travel surveyed parents about travelling with their children under five, finding out just what is best to keep kids busy while on the road. According to the survey, 57% of parents said that the best items to keep a child occupied on a flight are notebooks, pens and pencil. They beat out more modern alternatives, with only 27% saying an iPad or tablet are the best things for keeping the kids busy, followed far behind by sweets or chocolate (8%), toys (7%) and a pillow (2%).

But overall the stress of flying with kids can be too much for some parents, no matter how many distractions there are. About 30% of Brits said they would instead opt for a staycation with their family rather than deal with the issues that come along with flying.

However, if you are eager to get your kids used to coming along on your adventures, there are plenty of ways to make life easier. Find out more about flying with young children with advice from a child psychologist.
