Getting to know Susan Gallagher; A rising star within the film industry

In this highlight we turn our attention to Susan Gallagher, a gifted and hardworking actress within the industry. I asked Susan a series of questions, here is what we discussed;

Tell us a little about yourself, where your from, grew up, what H.S./College you attended, etc.

I grew up in Gastonia, North Carolina (just outside of Charlotte) the youngest of four. Attended a few local colleges, but graduated from the School of Hard Knocks. Was a very rebellious wild child cheerleader type.

What inspired you to be an artist? Early experiences worth sharing?

My Mother was a beautiful and talented jazz musician/singer and a natural born performer. Grew up around a lot of entertainers holding regular jam sessions in our home. My brother, Ed’s band practiced in our formal living room and my Mother coached beauty pageant contestants and held numerous talent shows for us kids. My sister, Barbara, was like a child Beethoven.

Talk about a time where you have faced adversity/conflict and have triumphed.

I embraced my inner wild child a little too much going down some dark roads at a very young age, but my oldest sister, Lisa, helped me to get my life together in 1985 after getting herself straightened out. Lisa relapsed into chemical/alcohol dependency was killed in a car wreck in 1994. The love I have for my husband and children and my strong support system helped me get through it without relapse.

What do you believe sets you apart from other artists?

Besides being passionate about the work, my adaptability and boldness help give me the ability to embrace characters with qualities that are quite different from my own without judgement, with an open heart and fearless determination. Having the courage to create and produce my own work continues to challenge me and forces me to grow from taking risks. Taking on different roles is what pleases me the most. To find the center of each of these characters is both challenging and rewarding. In the process, it reminds me I’ve discovered that my values in life are, well, embracing my own values. Each time I embrace a role, I learn about myself. The role of an actor is to question, uncover and confront things about your own life while playing these characters.

Do you have any other interests or hobbies?

I adore my family and friends, but my kids would say since they grew up and moved out, they’ve been replaced by rescue dogs.

Are there any projects you have out or are currently working on?

A webseries that I have been a part of for 2 seasons, Queering, has just recently been selected for SXSW and will be screening in March of 2019, I play Val. I recurred in 2018 in Season 1 as the sassy and very provocative homeless woman, Lynn, in the Karate Kid’s new hit series, Cobra Kai opposite William Zabka. Keep an eye out to see if Lynn returns in Season 2 this Spring. Also, I recently worked on “Walkway Joe” as the ex-wife of Joe Haley starring Oscar Nominee, David Strathairn and TWD’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Received a “Best Actress” nom from CA. Women’s FF for “Picking Back Up” where I starred as Anna Lakota, a Mom spiraling downwards from addiction/alcoholism. Due out in 2019, “I’ll Be Here For Awhile” where I had my biggest challenge portraying a Mom with Alzheimer’s opposite David Call (Sinner). Also, recurring as a bitter and wheelchair bound, Opal, in the upcoming TV series, “Sons of Thunder” opposite Randal Reeder (Deadpool 2) Other Indie Films I’m in due out this year are “Beast Beast” by Danny Madden (Thunderroad), Assassin 33 A.D. opposite Tony Award Winner Anthony Crivello, and several other short films and TV episodic work.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?

Working consistently on challenging roles with gifted actors. I’d love to have some grand babies, but I don’t want to push my kids, so I’ll settle for a guy named Oscar and a girl named Emmy.
