5 Things to Do When Moving Into a New Home

Moving into a new home comes with a list of a million things to do but before you overwhelm yourself with the abundance of boxes to unpack, take a step back and create a game plan with the five things you need to prioritize once you get into your new home.

Tip #1: Paint

Painting is one of the least expensive ways to add your own personal touch to your home. Before I begin unpacking my decor, painting is my number one priority, as its easier without furniture or decor to maneuver around. If you are renting, ask your landlord permission to paint, even if its only an accent wall. The rentals we have lived in have been painted in bright vibrant colors, so this neutral-loving girl simply asked permission, offered to pay for all materials, and provided paint samples of what colors we had planned. Without it, no matter how we tried to decorate around the existing colors it never truly felt like our own place.

Tip #2: Hang Curtains

Curtains make a world of difference in a room by providing privacy and softening the space. Personally, I love neutral or white curtains, but adding a pattern or color really can bring your own personality into your space. As a designer, I always hang our curtain rods 2-3 inches below the ceiling and hang at least 96-inch-long curtain panels for an average-height ceiling. This technique elongates your room and brings your eye from floor to ceiling.

Tip #3: Play With Furniture Arrangement

Bringing your existing furniture into a new space can bring a whole new set of challenges. Don’t be afraid to move the pieces into different arrangements and find what you like best. If there is furniture or that doesn’t seem to work in your new space, try swapping pieces from other rooms in your home. You might be surprised with the final outcome! One of the easiest ways you can play with a furniture arrangement is to draw your floor plan on a piece of paper, then cut out your furniture in smaller pieces and arrange them on the paper until you find an arrangement you are happy with. This will save time (and your back) moving that sofa all around!

Tip #4: Take Inventory of Your Belongings

It is important before you move to take inventory of the items you have and sell or give away the unwanted. But, it is just as important to do this after you move, as well. Once you have your spaces arranged in a way that pleases you, look around at decor or furniture that no longer serves its purpose, is outdated, or just isn’t your style anymore. Sell those items, then use that money to purchase new items that fit your new home and style better. With each new home, I like to look at it as a fresh start and actually enjoy the challenge of redecorating. Don’t be afraid to let go of what is no longer bringing you joy.

Tip #5: Explore The Neighborhood
