Stargaze from a luxury camp on Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia
Travellers looking for an otherworldly experience can now stay in a luxury dome lodge on Salar de Uunyi – or Uyuni salt flats – in Bolivia.
The new Kachi Lodge, from Amazing Escapes, is located at the foot of Tunupa volcano at an altitude of 11,800 feet. The lodge, which looks a bit like a space station, is design to offer views of the salt flats as well as the star-filled night sky.
The lodge is comprised of six luxury bedrooms pods that feature private bathrooms, as well a large lounge dome. They are all sat up on wooden decks above the surface of the salt flats. Inside the lounge, guests can relax and sample some authentic cuisine from an on-site chef.
Visitors can fill their days with the help of activity guides, as spend their days downhill mountain biking on the edge of the Tunupa Volcano, trekking to the volcano’s crater, hiking to the peak of Kachi Island for incredible views, and more. In the rainy season, guests are able to paddleboard over the Salar and enjoy its mirror-like appearance. They can also get a glimpse of the local culture in the village of Jijira, or see the archaeological site of Alcaya. If you are there to see the stars, the lodge not only has telescopes but also guides that can provide “insight into Andean cosmology and ancient cultural beliefs about the night sky.”
According to Amazing Escapes, “Kachi Lodge is a low environmental impact structure and in addition to the water treatment unit working in a closed loop, all of the systems are powered by solar energy only”. The rates start at US$1980 per person based on double occupancy and include a two-night stay, airport transfers, activities, and full board.
