A hillside home in London’s Highgate lists for £9.95m

This boxy London home is cocooned by trees and ferns on the edge of Highgate’s Hampstead Heath.

Architects Stanton Williams designed the six-bedroom property – listed with The Modern House for £9.95m – in 2014 for a film director. It is described by the Architects’ Journal as ‘beguilingly cave-like’ thanks to its cavernous proportions and position, embedded into a sloping site.

The London property is entered via a stone bridge, which leads to a double-height living space with glass doors onto the garden. Cedar panelling helps shade the cantilevered upper level, which has glass-fronted balconies with views over the nearby heath. Wood also features inside in the form of oak ceilings and floors.

Stanton Williams has placed large skylights to bring in natural light, and encourage the owners to ‘engage with nature at every possible opportunity throughout the seasons’ – as the firm puts it. This even extends walk-in wardrobe, which looks out over a green, sedum roof.
