July 11, 2019 Staff Report

Beginning this summer, parents on the south stretch of Sunnyside will have a local daycare option to consider for their children.

High Five Daycare, located at 50-08 39th St, will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday, July 13, with a three-hour open house from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. This will be followed by other open houses during the same hours on July 27, August 4, 10 and 17.

At each open house, parents will have an opportunity to take a tour of the facilities and learn about pricing and other enrollment-related information.

The daycare will serve children from 3 months to 5 years of age, and plans to be open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 51 weeks out of the year.

The interior features a reception area and four rooms, which will be divided by age groups upon enrollment.

One room will be set aside for children ages 4 and older, another room for 2- to 3-year-olds, a separate room for toddlers that are 14 to 24 months of age, and a smaller room for infants that are only 3 to 12 months old.

Jonathan Li, the founder and Executive Director of High Five Daycare, says total enrollment will be capped at 40 children, in order to ensure fun but dedicated environments that are safe for early childhood development.

“All rooms will be led by New York State certified teachers who have prior experience with infant care and preschool instruction,” Li said.

He added that each teacher will be assisted by similarly-experienced staff who are certified in CPR, First-Aid, Epi-Pen, mandated-reporter and infection control training.

Li, a 45-year-old Queens native, said his inspiration to open a daycare in this stretch of Sunnyside stemmed from visiting friends who lived there throughout his life.

Li said he often observed a great need for such a center in the area, which he described as having many residents but few daycare options.

“There have always been many residential buildings and multi-family homes between 47th Avenue and the BQE, but all the daycare centers were on the other side of Queens Boulevard,” he explained. “So I thought opening here would be the best way for me to serve the neighborhood.”

This will be the first business opened by Li, who personally brings in 10 years of experience working in the childcare industry.

The 2,500-square-foot daycare center is also the first ground floor business to open as part of a recent mixed-use development at the same address.

Discounts for early enrollment will be made available, as well as for referrals and registered siblings. For more information, readers can click here to visit their website, e-mail highfivekidsny@gmail.com or call 718-954-3402.
