New York City’s First Outlet Center – Christopher Chierchio
New Yorkers have often struggled to find the bargains which residents of surrounding cities and states are enjoying every day at outlet malls around the U.S. In May 2019, the shopping outlook for residents of New York City and its millions of tourists changed with the opening of the first outlet mall in the history of “The Big Apple.” Empire Outlets has opened on Staten Island to provide a wide range of stores with affordable prices and is not expected to compete with many of the malls open across the city.
The major benefit for those living in or visiting New York City is the fact the Staten Island ferry is free and brings visitors to the location of the outlet mall without the need for driving. Many of the best-known brands in the world have already opened stores at Empire Outlets, including Nike, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and American Eagle.
The decision to bring the outlets to the Staten Island location has been taken by BFC Partners which is a division of the Goldman Sachs financial institution. The $450 million investment made by BFC Partners is the first step in trying to bring more retail options to Staten Island and develop one of the last locations in New York City which has space for expansion. The development required the assistance of officials in New York City officials and their counterparts within the Federal Government.
Among the hopes of New York City residents and officials across the city is the desire to see the waterfront of Staten Island redeveloped with new stores and attractions created on the Island. Staten Island is in a perfect location for residents and tourists to enjoy a range of shopping and attractions in the coming years because of the use of the free ferry operating every day of the year around the clock. The free ferry passing between Manhattan Island and Staten Island’s St. George Terminal is used by around 22 million people but many simply enjoy the free water-based tour of the Statue of Liberty site. The development company is looking to bring a range of attractions and events to Empire Outlets which will include music festivals and family-friendly attractions located at the site of the outlets.
