An electric vehicle race will take over Brooklyn this weekend

Many streets in Red Hook and nearby neighborhoods will be closed this weekend

A large swath of Brooklyn will have street closures in effect this weekend—along with all of the traffic and street disruptions that brings—to accommodate the 2019 New York City ePrix on Saturday and Sunday.

For those who aren’t familiar with this sort of racing—kind of like the Grands Prix in Monaco or Australia, but with e-vehicles—Formula E, a series that uses only electric cars, began in 2014 and has since traveled to cities around the world. The New York City event first took over Brooklyn in 2017; this year’s race will be the third one in the borough.

Much of the action is centered in and around the relatively uncrowded streets of Red Hook, with the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal serving as the home base for the non-racing festivities. The track itself, which is nearly 1.5 miles long, will wind through the neighborhood, taking over Bowne Street and the surrounding areas. (So don’t plan a trip to Ikea this weekend.)

The event is an all-day affair, with gates to the spectator stations opening at 7 a.m., and races kicking off at 4 p.m. (You can buy tickets for the spectator areas, but grandstand tickets are sold out.)

But Brooklynites who couldn’t care less about electric vehicles will still feel the event’s impact, since many streets in Red Hook, Cobble Hill, and Park Slope—including a major stretch of Atlantic Avenue—will be closed.
