A rare Rafael Viñoly-designed home is for sale in Connecticut

A hilltop home by Rafael Viñoly has listed for $9.75m in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where its stark concrete lines cut through the surrounding greenery.

Viñoly designed the three-bedroom property in 1990 for Alice Lawrence, the widow of a New York real estate billionaire. She tasked the Uruguayan architect with creating both a home and a museum for her art collection, which perhaps accounts for its dramatic appearance.

‘It had nothing to do with the average considerations of what goes in a house,’ says Ridgefield architect Jeff Mose, who worked on the interiors.

The Connecticut property – now listed with Sotheby’s International Realty for $9.75m – is reached by a granite staircase and sheltered by slab-like concrete walls. Glass and steel dominate the interiors, which are crowned by a curved teak ceiling.

As well as a master bedroom, which is ensconced in a private tower, the contemporary home has an indoor and outdoor pool, and an observation deck that takes in the surrounding 100 miles of High Meadow Farms.

Buyers will also be getting a two-for-one deal: the sale estate includes a nearby farmhouse with barn, paddock and riding area.
