16-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Stabbed During Brawl Outside Strip Mall On Long Island – CBS New York
The attack, which happened on Monday afternoon in Oceanside, was captured on cellphone video and posted online. Police are now urging the dozens of students who witnessed it to come forward, CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported Tuesday.
The video showing the brutal after-school assault on two teenagers in the parking lot of a strip mall has made its rounds on social media. A group is seen kicking and punching a 17-year-old, who suffered a head injury and broken arm.
Khaseen Morris, 16, was stabbed multiple times in the chest and died overnight at a local hospital, police said.
“People videotaping is a disgrace. People stood around and taped and did not help,” parent Domenica Califano said.
“I’m in shock… Oceanside?” added parent Anna Vargas. “This is a very safe area. So you send your children by the school because there’s never any problem like that.”
Morris was a brand new student at Oceanside High School. He was a senior who his family described as the happiest he had been in a long time.
“Everybody knew him. He was new. He was a new kid. Everybody started talking to him, made a new friend,” Haley Cuba said.
“He was a happy-go-lucky kind of child, got along with everybody,” parent Jamine Ortiz added.
Crime scene investigators returned to the Brower Avenue strip mall on Tuesday morning. It’s a common hangout for Oceanside students. However, police said Monday up to seven teenagers from another neighborhood planned the attack.
Detectives said the victims knew there was a possibility the group would show up for a fight. Officers questioned some of the more than 50 teenagers who were at the scene, but they said more witnesses should come forward.
“It’s over a common girl and a perception of who she might be dating and who she might be hanging with at this time,” said Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick of the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad.
Friends returned to the parking lot to process their grief. Now police are looking for the group that is responsible.
Morris was the youngest of four children. His family said he loved music and art.
Police said they are trying to determine if the suspects are part of a gang. Investigators did not recover the weapon used in the deadly stabbing, but said they know the suspects they’re looking for.
