Burglars Steal $140K In Handbags, Jewelry From American Dream Mall Developer’s Bronx Home

The developer of the just-semi-opened American Dream and the Mall of America was the victim of a group of burglars who stole six figures worth of goods from his mansion in the Bronx over the weekend.

The burglary took place around 5:16 p.m. on November 9th, and police say that the burglars “gained entry” into the home on Grosvenor Street “by damaging the rear window on the balcony. Once inside, the individuals removed $140,000 worth of luggage and jewelry before fleeing in unknown direction.”

Security camera footage shows four people walking by a covered pool.

The residence belongs to Don Ghermezian, the CEO of the Triple 5 group, whose holdings include mall entertainment complexes. His grandfather immigrated from Iran to settle in North America, and the family turned a rug business into a huge conglomerate. Ghermizian told CNBC, “They were always risk takers, had big visions and big plans … always prepared to put their money and their mind where their mouth was,” he said. “A lot of that has been passed down to the next generation.”

The home itself is in the Villanova Heights luxury rental development (“McMansions” designed by Robert A.M. Stern) in Fieldston.

Anyone with information in regard to the identities of the males is asked to call the NYPD‘s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the CrimeStoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM, or on Twitter @ NYPDTips.
