Manhattan Man Claims He Found Half-Smoked Joint Inside Popeyes Chicken Sandwich

For millions of chicken-starved Americans, it was a very big deal when Popeyes announced a few weeks ago that they would be bringing back their chicken sandwiches after selling out their initial supplies in August. Finally, people would be able to consume the chicken instead of letting the chicken consume them. But as with most fast food, there is usually a price to pay for such indulgences—and for one Manhattan man, that price allegedly came in the form of a half-smoked joint smuggled inside his sandwich.

Jeremy Merdinger, who lives in Alphabet City, ventured to the West 14th Street Popeyes location on November 4th, a day after Popeyes relaunched the sandwich, to check out what all the hype was about. He told the Post he bought a spicy and a regular chicken sandwich and bought them back to his apartment to eat.

Everything was fine with the spicy one, but he allegedly found a surprise inside the other sandwich, which he said “shocked and disgusted” him: “I was taking my last couple of bites from the second sandwich when it fell out and into my lap,” he said. “It was 100 percent marijuana. I saved the evidence. It’s in a plastic bag at home.”

While some might view this as an unexpected bonus, Merdinger most certainly did not—he initially contacted Popeyes via email with photos of his receipt and the joint, but didn’t get a response. Merdinger’s boss at HYPR, an influencer company, then enlisted sports/business personality Darren Rovell to get Popeyes’ attention. They were reportedly told that Popeyes had investigated the situation but had no official response or apology, which is when Merdinger decided to tweet the photo above out.

“They were basically saying it happened outside of the restaurant, and there is nothing they can do,” Merdinger, who still wants a refund and an apology, told the Post. “They can at least admit they made a mistake. I would like for them to own up to it. I think it’s ridiculous and not professional.”

Merdinger did not immediately respond to our questions about the incident. In a highly ambiguous statement, Popeyes said: “We have high standards for the quality of our ingredients and the preparation of our food. We take all feedback about our meals seriously and quickly take action to make sure all of our guests have a good experience.”

At the end of the day, the important thing to remember is that all of this is still much better than that time someone allegedly found a rodent head cooked inside their Popeyes fried chicken, and no amount of national chicken hype can make me forget that story.
