Video: Nutcracker Balloon Knocks Over Marcher During Windy Parade

3

Thursday’s mighty winds weren’t quite powerful enough to ground Astronaut Snoopy, Goku from Dragon Ball Z, and the Pillsbury Doughboy at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. But it was still very windy, which meant the balloon handlers had a challenging job navigating balloons weighing hundreds of pounds—and stretching as long at 77 feet (Red Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger) or as high as 62 feet (Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid)—along the 2.5-mile parade route.

The suspense of whether a balloon would swerve out of control provided ample drama for spectators, who cheered on the handlers struggling to safely escort the balloons through wind tunnel intersections:

Beyond the 16 big character balloons, there were 40 other smaller balloons, and one of those can bee seen in this video knocking down a marcher. Oh, Nutcracker:

According to the Post, the balloon, at 45 feet, was on Central Park West near West 74th Street when it went pretty much horizontal at 10:38 a.m.: “That’s when the brave parade worker rushed the supersized balloon to help. But she got whacked by the side of the inflatable’s white hair, and fell flat on her back. The woman immediately got back up, and then raced to catch up to the Nutcracker as it continues along the route.”

The NY Times reported how one police officer exclaimed, “This is stressful!” near Columbus Circle “as Jett, an airplane character from the “Super Wings” cartoon, nose-dived into the pavement before being rescued by handlers hauling on its strings.”

Till next year!
